Fall Crafts: Homemade Night Lights

Here's a fun craft that our kids from the PODER After School program made! An easy home made safe night light. The materials you'll need are:
-Colorful Tissue Paper
-Glue
-Paintbrushes
-Jars with lids
-Flameless tealight candles

First step is to cut different colored tissue papers into squares. Then squeeze some glue into cups, but dilute it with water. You should have a consistency of watery glue.

Second, grab some of your kiddos for the craft! Make sure all the jars have no lids. They can turn their jars upside down and spread the watery glue. Then they can stick the tissue paper squares overlapping it until they cover the jar (make sure not to cover the top part where the jar cap needs to be screwed on).

Last step is to wait for the jars to dry. Once they are dry, you can stick a flameless candle in the jar and turn it one. You can either keep the cap off or put it back on. Your homemade night lights are complete!

Quote of the Week

“I think that the best thing we can do for our children is to allow them to do things for themselves, allow them to be strong, allow them to experience life on their own terms...let them be better people, let them believe more in themselves.” ― C. JoyBell C.

COME SUPPORT OUR KIDS' PROGRAM

Our kids' program at the San Marcos Housing Authority is raising money not only for our end of the summer trip to NASA in Houston, but for the start of the new school year. Profits made go to all the kids activities, including our biggest event, Texas Night Out in October.

Our NASA trip will be a big end to the Summer Program. Depending on the amount raised will determine how many kids will be able to participate in this amazing trip. Texas Night Out is an event where families can come together for one night to have a fun worry-free time. There are games, food, and prices for the families to enjoy.

We will be selling clothes for the entire family, home decor, shoes, and some electronics. Aside from the garage sale we will be having a back to school raffle. The raffle will have two winners. Prizes are a book-bag with school supplies. School supplies include notebooks, crayons, glue, pencils, etc
.
Along with the the raffle and garage sale we will be selling breakfast tacos, empanadas, and aguas frescas.
There will be donations jars set up around different stations. Anything helps so come by and support the kids of the KAD program.

Field Trip to the Library

Last week our 6-10 year-olds were able to take a field trip to the San Marcos Public Library. The kids were able to get a tour of the library. During the tour the kids also learned how to search for books in the library data system.

Kids were able to find books on some of their favorite topics. Some searched for how to build Lego models, others found some of their favorite books that they read during the school year, while others searched for Spider-man books.

The librarian gave us library card applications to send home with the kids. Kids were excited to get their cards for future visits.

Summer is Here!

It is Summer in San Marcos! It has been two week since kid's have been out for summer vacation and they are ready to have a fun summer.

PODER's camp has been going AMAZING for the kids. We took our first field trip last Thursday--Schlitterbahn! The kids enjoyed a fun filled day with their families in the water.

During camp not only are the kids having fun but they are still learning. We are having writing, science, and math  activities with a fun twist.

In order for kids to have the energy for a full day of fun, the PODER Learning Center is providing lunch for children under the age of 18. Food Bank is providing nutritious meals and snacks Monday through Friday.  Lunch is between 11:30am-12:30pm and snack starts at 3:00pm and ends at 4:00pm (Monday-Thurday) Friday we will only have lunch and it will be from 11:00am-12:00pm.
